Political Asylee Tragically Killed in Car Crash by US Citizen

Updated: Dec 28, 2023

Florida Highway Patrol Fails to Investigate

Ana Celia Lima Pereira, our client, met a tragic end in a fatal motor vehicle crash.

Ana, a devoted wife and a loving mother of two, fell victim to a head-on collision on October 21, 2023, when another vehicle entered her lane, traveling in the wrong direction. The impact caused the vehicle to roll over multiple times, resulting in a devastating explosion. Ana's spouse and five-year-old son were subsequently airlifted to a hospital in West Palm Beach, where they received treatment for severe injuries.

Ana Celia, a Brazilian national, dedicated her life to providing medical supplies to impoverished individuals in favelas. Following the return of the Lula regime to power in Brazil, Ana Celia began receiving death threats from gangs controlling the favelas. These threats were tied to her association with the Bolsonaro government, prompting her decision to seek asylum in the United States. Tragically, her dream of finding safety from political persecution was cut short.

Attorney Kristian Chestnut spoke with the Florida Highway Patrol, confirming that the driver of the other vehicle was at fault for the fatal crash. The driver received a traffic violation for crossing the double-yellow line.

"It is deeply concerning to learn that no field sobriety tests were administered to ascertain whether the driver responsible for Ana's tragic passing was impaired by alcohol or drugs. This oversight raises significant questions about the thoroughness of the investigation. Furthermore, the controversial decision of Governor DeSantis to transport asylees to places like Martha’s Vineyard has created an atmosphere of impropriety, leading one to ponder whether Ana Celia's life was given the value it deserved in the eyes of the State of Florida."

The Chestnut Law Group, PLLC, remains steadfast in its commitment to seeking justice for the untimely passing of Ana Celia Lima Pereira. In these trying times, we are reminded of the profound impact that community and boundless compassion can have.
